There was one scene in the original series that feels relevant to mid-2000s politics to me in retrospect. When Zuko confronts Ozai he laments being taught that the Fire Nation was the greatest country in history and that the war was their way of sharing that greatness with the rest of the world. Agreed. I saw Airbender in its entirety after it came out on Netflix’s streaming service (2012, I believe), and yes, it was excellent television. Is a masterpiece like this one even possible today? (As a side note, Aaron Ehasz went on to do his own show: The Dragon Prince. I haven’t seen that one, though.)

Unfortunately I highly doubt we’ll get another Avatar due to a variety of factors. Even when the creative team isn’t under impossible deadlines, I fear that the culture war rot era we live in will undoubtedly affect them given their recent comments.

I haven’t seen Dragon Prince either, but I’ve heard good things. For me it’s less that Ehasz was solely responsible for what made Avatar great and more that he was the important final ingredient to add the subtle nuances and touches it needed.

All that sounds fair, both about Ehasz and about the cultural climate. Maybe that’s why some folks look to anime now, since there’s less culture war nonsense involved.
